Amed

Amed is situated in north east Bali. Amed's villagers exist from salt panning. Arriving there you will notice the woodpiles which are used for this technique of salt extraction. The coral garden starts right off the beach breaking the surface with a staghorn coral field and huge schools of glass fish. This is Bali's best snorkelling area. The actual dive site can be reached by outrigger boat. The dive starts in a shallow area of 3 to 8 m in a wonderful coral garden. You may encounter turtles and bumphead parrot fish. A moderate current will guide you in approx. 20 min to the drop off's edge. One of Amed's drop offs drops straight down to 30 m. It is beautifully grown with soft coral and any possible species of reef fish can be found there. White- and blacktip reef sharks pop in occasionally to patrol their feeding ground. The highlight however is an area at 27 m of depth with a sandy field full of blue-spotted stingrays.
The other drop off is only 25 m deep, ideal for the subsequent shallower dive. The dive site features a pinnacle, which erects from a depth of 25 m forming a scenic swim through in 20 m. At both drop offs your 5m safety stop will be highly entertaining. Both dives are drift dives with a mild current, with outrigger boats following the divers. Both are very comfortable dives. The visibility may be limited during the rainy season (December to March), urging us to visit other dive sites with better conditions.

Visibility: 5-25m
Depths: 3-12.m (10-40ft)
Diving Conditions: Easy calm diving.
Travel time to site: 2,5 hours drive by mini-bus
Underwater Topography: On the south 3 hours by mini-bus and 20 min. by traditional boat eastern side of the bay, the terrain slopes gradually to a ledge between 9-12 m. You can find coral heads, fields of stag-horn coral. The reef starts just to the right of the river mouth and runs along the cliff line. This was once a beautiful place for snorkellers but due to a combination of El Nino conditions and siltation from upland farms, damage to many of the corals occurred in the late  90s.
Snorkelling is still pleasant here.

Location: Amed village
Visibility: 5-20m
Depths: 3-40 m (10-130ft)

The walls are saddled with the un-inspired monikers Amed 1, 2 and 3. The walls have lots of sea fans, sponges and fish life. Amed 1 is in about 37 m. to the right of the river channel.
Amed 2, directly in front of the channel in about 30 m.
Amed 3 is to the left in about 37 m.
